Armed attackers shot dead two members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards at their home in the western city of Paveh on Tuesday. The fatal shooting occurred near the border with Iraq’s Kurdistan region, sparking an immediate security response. State television characterized the killings as a cowardly terrorist act, noting that the gunfire also wounded two other Guards members.
Iranian authorities quickly launched a comprehensive review to identify the perpetrators. Tehran frequently blames Kurdish separatist groups operating in the border area for similar violence, accusing them of maintaining operational links to the United States and Israel. Following the incident, the official media outlet of the Guards announced that security forces successfully dismantled an armed team working for anti-government separatist groups that crossed into Iran from the northwestern border.
Meanwhile, a separate violent incident disrupted the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan on Monday. Attackers sprayed a family’s vehicle with bullets in the town of Saravan, killing a father and mortally wounding a mother who later died of her injuries. State media blamed Zionist-American mercenaries for the deadly ambush, using a term Iranian officials regularly apply to regional militant groups.
The restive Sistan-Baluchistan province borders both Pakistan and Afghanistan. The impoverished region frequently experiences violent clashes involving national security forces, drug smugglers, and ethnic Baloch insurgents. Following these back-to-back border area attacks, Iranian security agencies intensified their intelligence operations to stabilize the frontier zones and prevent further incursions by hostile armed groups.
