GUJRAT: Gujranwala police arrested a suspect accused of kidnapping and killing four people in separate incidents after allegedly snatching valuables from the victims. The victims include a 32-year-old woman, her two children, and a 13-year-old boy.
Bodies Found Near Canal Trigger Investigation
Gujranwala Capital City Police Officer (CPO) Dr. Ghias Gul told reporters during a news conference that police found two unidentified bodies along the bank of a canal near Citi Housing Society on February 10. Police later identified the deceased as Malaika, 32, and her five-year-old son, Muhammad Ahmed.
Dr. Ghias Gul said the victims suffered fatal injuries caused by a sharp-edged weapon. Police registered a double murder case on the report of a police official. Soon after, authorities formed a special investigation team led by SP Civil Lines Imran Khan and DSP Hameed Virk to trace the killer using modern investigative techniques.
Suspect Confesses to Killing Family for Gold Ornaments
The CPO said the investigation team arrested the suspect, identified as Haroon Javed, while he attempted to flee to Karachi by train from Lahore. During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to killing Malaika and her two children. He also admitted to murdering the womanโs eight-month-old daughter, Mubara, through asphyxiation and throwing her body into the canal.
Police recovered the infantโs body from the canal on the suspectโs identification. According to the CPO, the suspect killed the family to snatch gold ornaments the woman wore in her ears. Police said the suspect belonged to the same Alam Chowk area where the woman lived.
Teen Boy Murder Also Linked to Accused
The suspect also confessed to killing 13-year-old Rehan Ali from the Mado Khalil locality in the Ladhewala police jurisdiction on December 20. The CPO said the suspect kidnapped the boy to steal a bridal dress and later murdered him. The boyโs father, Muhammad Imran, who runs an embroidery factory, had filed a kidnapping case against unidentified suspects at the time.
Gujranwala police chief lauded the efforts of his team who investigated the murder cases and arrested the serial killer.
