Gracie Abrams has finally cleared the air about the inspiration behind her latest track ‘Death Wish’. The song sparked speculation among fans who believed it referenced her close friend Taylor Swift. However, the singer’s collaborators and Abrams herself have explained that the track tells a different story.
The song appears on Abrams’ recently released album Daughter From Hell. Its emotional lyrics describe a toxic relationship and the pain of watching someone close struggle with a difficult partner.
‘Death Wish’ Was Not Inspired by Taylor Swift
Fans linked the song to Taylor Swift after analysing its lyrics and searching for hidden meanings. However, co-writer Aaron Dessner rejected those theories and said the track was not about Swift.
Dessner, who has also worked with Swift on several projects, explained that the song came from a different situation. In a Billboard interview published on July 22, he said Abrams wrote the track while discussing a friend’s unhealthy relationship.
“Death Wish” was “written at a time when Abrams was writing about a friend’s ex, being in a bad relationship.”
Dessner added that the song was likely about that person but admitted he did not know the individual involved.
He also explained that he prefers not to ask artists about the exact meaning behind their lyrics. According to him, leaving some mystery around songwriting makes the creative process more interesting.
Gracie Abrams Shares Song’s True Story
Abrams previously revealed the inspiration behind ‘Death Wish’ during a March 2025 performance on her The Secret of Us Tour.
The singer told fans that the song focused on a friend who was dating someone with narcissistic behaviour.
“A sincere friend of mine was recently dating someone who kind of sucked,” she shared at the time. “And I was listening to them talk about it a lot, and so this song is about that.”
Despite her explanation, online speculation continued because of Abrams’ friendship with Swift. Fans continued searching for possible connections between the song and the pop superstar.
Taylor Swift Friendship Rumours Continue Online
The rumours gained more attention after Abrams shared an Instagram carousel earlier this month. The post included a picture of the dress she wore to Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding, along with an image featuring Swift’s former partner Joe Alwyn.
Some fans questioned the timing of the post and discussed whether it hinted at tension between the two singers. However, Abrams has not publicly commented on rumours of a friendship issue with Swift.
Despite the speculation, Abrams has previously spoken positively about Swift’s advice on music. She shared that Swift encouraged her to continue writing and use emotions as inspiration.
“The first thing that comes to mind when you ask that is, the encouragement to just never stop writing,” Abrams said during a July 12 episode of CBS Sunday Morning.
She explained that writing helped her process emotions instead of simply holding onto difficult feelings.
While fans continue to analyse every detail surrounding ‘Death Wish’, Abrams has made one thing clear: the song reflects a friend’s difficult relationship, not Taylor Swift’s personal life.
