The federal government on Wednesday tabled a resolution in the National Assembly seeking parliamentary endorsement of the emergency imposed in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), amid escalating political tensions over the province’s security situation.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry presented the resolution after lawmakers agreed to suspend Question Hour. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar defended the government’s decision, maintaining that the constitutional measures were necessary to address growing security threats.
Government Cites Deteriorating Security
Tarar said the emergency followed concerns over rising terrorist attacks, internal unrest and cross-border infiltration. He also argued that the federal government had exercised its constitutional powers to protect national security, public welfare and the country’s unity.
The law minister cited 2,911 terrorist incidents in K-P between 2021 and 2024, stressing that the worsening situation required decisive action. He maintained that the decision followed detailed discussions within the federal cabinet.
President Asif Ali Zardari approved the emergency measures on October 11 after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recommended action under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution.
Political Tensions Over Provincial Rule
Prime Minister Shehbaz has said the federal government pursued negotiations with the provincial leadership but failed to secure sufficient cooperation on security matters. He has accused the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led administration of failing to respond effectively to terrorism.
However, PTI has opposed the federal government’s move, describing it as politically motivated and challenging the justification for emergency rule. The dispute has intensified tensions between Islamabad and the provincial leadership.
The resolution marks a key parliamentary step in the government’s effort to secure endorsement for its measures in K-P. The National Assembly and Senate are also expected to consider the matter as the constitutional process continues.
