Punjab’s Interior Ministry has issued a ban on all meetings with inmates at Adiala Jail, including Imran Khan, in response to a credible threat of a terrorist attack.
The decision follows intelligence reports warning of potential terrorist activity targeting Adiala Jail. Consequently, media coverage outside Gate No. 5 of Adiala Jail has also been prohibited.
The facility currently detains several high-profile prisoners, including former Prime Minister Imran Khan and former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi. Previously, Tuesdays and Thursdays were designated as meeting days for Imran Khan, allowing party officials, lawyers, and family members to visit him.
Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and Fawad Chaudhry are among the notable figures also incarcerated at the same facility.
This development comes shortly after law enforcement thwarted a major terrorist plot involving Adiala Jail. Three terrorists were apprehended with weapons and maps of the jail, according to police reports.
Omar Ayub Khan, the nominated opposition leader from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), recently reported being denied permission by jail authorities to meet Khan, despite court orders. He blamed the jail superintendent for the denial and announced the party’s intention to raise the issue in the assembly through a resolution.
Imran Khan was arrested on August 5 from his Lahore residence, immediately after an Islamabad court found him guilty of corrupt practices in the Toshakhana case. Initially held at Atoock Jail, he was transferred to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on September 26.
During his detention, Khan has not made public appearances or attended court hearings in person. Instead, judges and lawyers have conducted trial proceedings at the jail, citing security concerns as the reason for this arrangement.
Prior to this year’s general election, Khan was sentenced to 10 years in jail in the cipher case, seven years in the illegal nikah case, and 14 years in the Toshakhana reference.
