Australia’s star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has withdrawn from the IPL 2026 season, bringing an end to his 13-year journey in the world’s most high-profile T20 league. His decision comes ahead of next month’s mega auction in Abu Dhabi.
Maxwell, who was signed by Punjab Kings for Rs42 million ($467,000) last season, struggled to make an impact—scoring just 48 runs and taking four wickets in seven matches. The franchise released him in November, after which Maxwell chose to sit out the upcoming season.
In a heartfelt Instagram statement, the 37-year-old said the IPL had played a major role in shaping his cricketing career and personal growth.
“It’s a big call, and one I make with a lot of gratitude for everything this league has given me,” Maxwell wrote.
“The IPL has helped shape me as a cricketer and as a person. I’ve been lucky to play with world-class teammates, represent incredible franchises, and perform in front of fans whose passion is unmatched. The memories, the challenges, and the energy of India will stay with me forever.”
Maxwell first joined the IPL in 2012 and went on to represent several teams, building a reputation as one of the league’s most dynamic all-rounders.
His withdrawal comes shortly after Faf du Plessis and Andre Russell also opted out of IPL 2026. Du Plessis is set to feature in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), while Russell will join the Kolkata Knight Riders coaching setup, ending his long tenure as a player.
The IPL 2026 mega auction is scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi.
