Germany has reaffirmed its commitment to sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine, despite US President Donald Trump’s decision to temporarily ease restrictions on Russian fuel supplies.
German government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius said on Saturday that Berlin had taken note of Washington’s decision concerning Russian diesel deliveries. However, he stressed that Germany would continue enforcing its existing sanctions and cooperate with European partners to introduce additional measures.
Kornelius also emphasized that Germany’s support for Ukraine remained unchanged and that diplomatic efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution would continue.
Trump announced on Friday that Russia had agreed to supply diesel to international markets to help reduce rising fuel prices. He said his administration had temporarily lifted US sanctions on Russian fuel, which were designed to restrict Moscow’s revenue for financing its war against Ukraine.
The announcement marks a significant shift in Washington’s approach as diesel prices approach record levels. Higher fuel costs have increased economic pressure, particularly on agriculture, home heating and road transportation.
The timing also presents political challenges for Trump’s Republican Party ahead of the November 3 congressional elections, which will determine whether the party retains its narrow control of Congress.
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has reiterated that Berlin will not reduce its assistance to Kyiv. Germany remains Ukraine’s largest European donor and continues to support its defence against Russian aggression.
The contrasting positions highlight differences between Washington and Berlin over sanctions policy and economic priorities.
