German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Sunday expressed deep concern over the potential fallout from recent US and Israeli strikes on Iran, while reaffirming Berlinโs shared strategic goals with Washington. Speaking in Berlin, Merz urged caution and forward planning as tensions continue to rise across the Middle East.
Germany backs US stance on Iranโs weapons programs
Merz stated that Germany aligns with the United States in seeking to curb Iranโs nuclear and ballistic missile ambitions. He emphasized that both countries want to end what he described as Tehranโs support for terrorism and its pursuit of advanced weapons capabilities.
Moreover, the chancellor framed the recent strikes as part of broader efforts to halt destabilizing behavior. However, he acknowledged Iranโs long-standing position that its nuclear program serves peaceful civilian purposes.
At the same time, Merz stressed the importance of allied unity. He said partners should avoid public divisions during such a sensitive period, even if some questions remain about the military action.
Chancellor urges caution amid uncertainty
Nevertheless, Merz warned that the strikes carry serious risks for regional stability. He said officials cannot yet predict how strongly Iran might respond or how far the conflict could spread.
In addition, the German leader expressed skepticism about whether external military pressure alone can trigger meaningful political change inside Iran. He noted that such outcomes often prove complex and unpredictable.
Looking ahead, Merz called for close coordination with the United States, Israel, regional partners, and European allies. He urged stakeholders to develop a clear โday afterโ strategy focused on long-term stability and support for the Iranian people.
Observers say Germany is carefully balancing firm security concerns with diplomatic caution as the crisis evolves.
