ISLAMABAD: General Aamer Raza met Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi on Monday.
According to the military’s media wing, Munir congratulated Raza on assuming command of the National Strategic Command.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif promoted Raza to four-star general and appointed him Commander of the National Strategic Command.
The prime minister also congratulated the newly promoted general and wished him success in carrying out the important responsibility.
Meanwhile, the Inter-Services Public Relations said Raza received a guard of honour upon arriving at GHQ.
He also laid a floral wreath at Yadgar-i-Shuhada and offered prayers for the martyrs.
Raza has previously received the Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military) and Sitara-i-Basalat (Star of Valour) awards.
The National Strategic Command position emerged under the 27th Constitutional Amendment passed last year.
The amendment introduced major changes to the military command structure and assigned the CNSC the nuclear management role.
Previously, the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee performed that responsibility. However, the amendment abolished the CJCSC position.
Furthermore, the appointment, reappointment and extension of the CNSC depend solely on recommendations from the Chief of Defence Forces.
The amendment also created the CDF position to establish a unified command structure across Pakistan’s armed forces.
It further states that courts cannot challenge the appointment, reappointment or extension of the CNSC on any grounds.
Field Marshal Asim Munir became Pakistan’s first Chief of Defence Forces following the amendment’s passage last year.
