Google has introduced a powerful new capability to Gemini that can identify whether an image was created with artificial intelligence. This feature arrives soon after the release of Gemini 3. However, the detection tool functions separately from the model’s generative upgrades, making it a dedicated solution for content authenticity.
SynthID Technology Powers the New Detection Feature
The detection system relies on Google’s SynthID technology. This tool embeds invisible digital watermarks into AI-generated images, videos, audio and even text. These markers do not appear visually. Instead, they exist deeply within the file’s data. This design makes the watermark extremely difficult to remove or alter.
SynthID has already been integrated into several Google platforms. Now, users can directly access the detector inside Gemini. By tagging @SynthID and uploading an image, users can receive a quick authenticity check.
How Gemini Detects AI-Generated or AI-Edited Images
Gemini scans the uploaded file for embedded SynthID watermarks. The tool then reports whether the watermark exists and shows how strongly it appears. This process helps determine whether the entire image was generated by AI or whether only a portion was edited with AI tools.

A Helpful Tool With Clear Limitations
