Geely has unveiled an ultra-fast EV charging system that could dramatically cut the time drivers spend at charging stations. The company says its new 2.2MW system can charge compatible electric vehicles from 10% to 70% in about 4.5 minutes.
The technology reflects a growing shift in China’s electric vehicle market, where automakers are competing to make charging times closer to conventional fuel refuelling. Geely’s latest system combines high-power charging hardware with artificial intelligence-based battery and thermal management.
Geely Smart Charge Reaches 2.25MW Output
Geely’s new system, called Smart Charge, delivers a peak output of 2,250kW through a single charging gun. The company has paired this megawatt-level hardware with technology designed to manage battery temperature during ultra-fast charging.
In testing, a Lynk & Co 10 using Geely’s latest battery technology reached a peak charging rate of 1,093kW. It reportedly charged from 10% to 70% in around 4.5 minutes.
The same vehicle reached 97% charge in 8 minutes and 40 seconds during the test. However, these charging figures depend on the vehicle, battery technology and compatible charging equipment.
AI Helps Control Battery Temperature
Ultra-fast charging creates another challenge because higher charging power can generate additional battery heat. Therefore, Geely is using its Xingrui PowerMind energy model to manage temperature during charging.
The AI-based system predicts changes in battery temperature and adjusts charging power in real time. This approach is designed to keep the battery within safe thermal limits while maintaining faster charging speeds.
Geely Introduces Aegis Golden Brick Battery
Alongside Smart Charge, Geely has introduced its latest Aegis Golden Brick ultra-short blade battery technology. The company’s higher-performance 12C battery powers models including the Lynk & Co 10 and Zeekr 001.
Meanwhile, Geely is introducing a 6C battery in the upgraded Geely Galaxy E5. This battery can charge from 10% to 70% in approximately 8 minutes and 25 seconds.
However, the 4.5-minute charging figure applies specifically to vehicles using higher-rate battery technology and compatible charging hardware.
Geely Takes Aim at BYD’s Charging Technology
China’s EV competition is increasingly moving beyond driving range and toward charging speed. BYD has already introduced fast-charging technology capable of taking compatible vehicles from 10% to 97% in around nine minutes.
Geely’s latest system enters the same race as manufacturers work to make EV charging stops more comparable with traditional refuelling. Geely executive Zhang Dewang said charging speeds are approaching physical limits.
As a result, future improvements could become smaller as battery and charging technologies continue to develop.
Charging Infrastructure Remains a Major Challenge
Despite advances in charging technology, infrastructure will determine how widely ultra-fast charging can be used. Vehicles capable of megawatt-level charging need compatible stations to achieve their advertised charging speeds.
Geely plans to expand its charging network across China, targeting more than 100,000 charging guns by the end of 2027. More than 50,000 of those units are expected to be Geely Smart Charge systems.
The company has additionally increased eligible battery warranties from eight years or 150,000 kilometres to eight years or 200,000 kilometres. It also plans to offer charging credits to buyers of compatible vehicles.
What Could Geely’s EV Technology Mean for Pakistan?
Geely is preparing to enter Pakistan’s automotive market with electric vehicles, including the Geely EX5 SUV. The international EX5 is based on the Galaxy E5 platform.
The Galaxy E5 is among the vehicles receiving Geely’s newer 6C battery technology in China. However, battery specifications and charging capabilities for Pakistan have not yet been confirmed.
Therefore, charging infrastructure will remain an important factor for Pakistani buyers. The availability of suitable high-speed charging stations will determine how much benefit future EVs can receive from advanced charging technology.
Geely Pushes EV Charging Toward the Next Stage
Geely’s 2.2MW charging system shows how quickly EV technology is shifting toward shorter charging times. Instead of focusing only on longer driving ranges, manufacturers are increasingly targeting faster charging.
Still, the 4.5-minute figure applies to a specific combination of battery and charging hardware. The broader challenge will be building enough compatible infrastructure to make such speeds practical for everyday drivers.
