BARCELONA: The Global Sumud Flotilla began its symbolic journey from Barcelonaโs Port Vell on Sunday, aiming to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and highlight the ongoing crisis in the enclave. Organisers delayed the move into international waters because of bad weather, but they remain determined to reach their destination.
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition confirmed the departure. Thiago Avila, a coordinator, explained the cautious approach. โDue to weather conditions, our mission will sail from this port today, but will not be sailing to international waters because we cannot make this journey safely today,โ he said.
Flotilla Plans to Reach Gaza in Stages
The convoy plans to travel in phases. Avila added that the team will stop whenever necessary to wait for better weather. Moreover, safety and technical requirements will guide every decision during the voyage. Transitioning from the symbolic start, the flotilla hopes to break Israelโs blockade and bring much-needed supplies to Gazaโs suffering population.
Furthermore, this mission stands out as much larger than previous efforts. It includes around 70 vessels and nearly 1,000 participants from 70 different countries. Compared to the September 2025 flotilla, which had 42 boats and 462 people, this one shows growing international support for the Palestinian cause.
Huge Scale Shows Global Solidarity
Activists from across the world joined the effort to draw attention to the humanitarian situation in Gaza. They carry essential aid and a clear message of solidarity. However, rough seas forced them to postpone the full departure, yet the team stays flexible and ready to move forward when conditions improve.
The Global Sumud Flotilla continues its journey with strong resolve. Supporters believe this bold initiative will keep the worldโs focus on Gaza and pressure authorities to ease the blockade. Many watch closely as the ships prepare to sail onward toward their destination.
