SHIKARPUR: Funeral prayers were offered for eight mourners who lost their lives in a tragic electrocution incident during a Muharram gathering in Shikarpur. The victims were later laid to rest in a local graveyard amid scenes of grief.
The accident occurred in Bodo Walisabad village near Dakkhan town, where hundreds of people had gathered to observe the annual mourning ceremonies commemorating the martyrs of Karbala.
Electrocution During Muharram Gathering
According to local authorities, a large metal Alam came into contact with an 11,000-volt high-tension electricity line while it was being installed. The powerful electric shock claimed eight lives and injured at least 15 others.
Furthermore, police said the Alam lost balance and tilted toward the overhead transmission cables. Witnesses described panic as mourners rushed to escape the area following the incident.
The deceased were identified as Hidayatullah, Abdul Waheed, Mohammad Khalid, Mohammad Zahid, Shafiq Ahmed, Din Mohammad, Arbab, and Mohammad Hassan. All belonged to the local Jaffaria community and were participating in the religious procession.
Investigation Underway
Meanwhile, rescue teams, police personnel, and local residents immediately launched relief operations. Ambulances shifted the injured to nearby hospitals, while critically injured victims were referred to medical facilities in Shikarpur, Larkana, and Sukkur for specialized treatment.
Hundreds of relatives, friends, and residents attended the funeral prayers before the victims were buried. The tragedy has left the village in mourning during the sacred month of Muharram.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Officials will also examine whether additional safety measures around high-voltage power lines could have prevented the deadly incident.
