Former Contestant Faces Possible Life Sentence
Former American Idol contestant Caleb Flynn has been found guilty of killing his wife, Ashley Flynn, at their family home in Ohio.
Flynn was convicted on September 29. He is scheduled to return to court on October 5 for sentencing. He could face life in prison without the possibility of release.
Ashley was 37 when she was found shot inside the family home on February 16. Flynn and the couple’s two daughters were also inside the house at the time. The girls, aged nine and 12, were not injured.
Police Questioned Flynn’s Account
Flynn initially told police that an intruder had entered the house and shot Ashley before fleeing.
Investigators later found inconsistencies in his account. Flynn reportedly gave different explanations about where he was when Ashley was shot.
Prosecutors argued that there was no unknown attacker inside the home. They said Flynn staged the house to make it appear that someone had broken in.
The prosecution also presented evidence involving Flynn’s relationship with Alleigha Botner. According to the court, the two had been together for more than two years.
Botner testified about thousands of messages exchanged with Flynn. Prosecutors presented messages in which Flynn allegedly discussed wanting Ashley dead and considered ways to kill her.
Wife Remembered as Mother and Teacher
Flynn and Ashley had been married for 15 years. Ashley was described as a mother, teacher, volleyball coach and volunteer.
Flynn had appeared on American Idol in 2013, where he spoke positively about his wife.
Despite the verdict, Flynn continues to maintain that he did not kill Ashley. His lawyer has indicated that the defence plans to appeal the conviction.
The court will determine Flynn’s sentence on October 5.
