Yemen’s Houthi group has claimed a fresh wave of drone and ballistic missile attacks against airports and military sites in Saudi Arabia. The claims came as fighting intensified across Yemen and Saudi-backed forces pushed against Houthi positions.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the group targeted several locations in Saudi Arabia early Wednesday. However, Saudi authorities have not confirmed all of the claimed attacks.
Houthis Claim Attack on Riyadh Airport
Saree said Houthi forces targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh with several drones. He described the operation as precise and claimed it disrupted air traffic at the airport. Saudi officials had not immediately confirmed an attack on the Riyadh airport.
The Saudi-led coalition, meanwhile, said it intercepted and destroyed a Houthi ballistic missile launched toward the Riyadh area.
Coalition spokesman Brigadier General Turki al-Maliki said forces tracked the missile’s launch platform near Sanaa. He also said coalition forces planned to destroy the platform.
Attacks Claimed Near Abha and Khamis Mushait
Saree also claimed attacks on Abha International Airport and Khamis Mushait Air Base. He said Houthi forces used a combination of ballistic missiles and drones in the operations. He further claimed that the attacks disrupted airport operations and damaged the military base.
The coalition separately reported that it intercepted a ballistic missile heading toward Khamis Mushait.
Saudi authorities had not immediately confirmed the Houthi claim regarding Abha airport. It also remained unclear whether the reported interception involved the same operation described by Saree.
Houthis Claim Attacks on Three Military Camps
In another statement, Saree said Houthi forces targeted three Saudi military camps. The claimed targets included Dagharir in Jizan, Aakifah in Asir and Al-Mawsim in Jizan.
According to the Houthi spokesman, the group used a large number of ballistic missiles and drones in the attacks. The claims could not be independently verified.
Fighting Intensifies Across Yemen
The latest claims come as fighting has intensified on several fronts inside Yemen. Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces have launched an offensive to retake territory around the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the city of Mocha. The campaign has pushed Houthi forces out of several areas they captured recently.
At the same time, the Houthis have continued missile and drone attacks against Saudi targets.
On Wednesday, Houthi forces also reportedly attacked Aden International Airport with ballistic missiles and explosive-laden drones. Yemeni authorities said one missile landed near the runway and forced a flight from Cairo to divert to Jeddah.
Yemen Conflict Enters Another Dangerous Phase
The renewed fighting marks a major escalation in Yemen’s long-running conflict. The latest developments have also raised concerns about regional security and vital transport routes around the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
For now, competing claims from the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition remain at the center of the latest escalation. Further details are expected as authorities assess the reported attacks and their impact.
