French European Parliament member Rima Hassan is facing possible disciplinary action after an incident involving an Israeli flag at an exhibition commemorating victims of the October 7, 2023 attacks.
The incident occurred in Strasbourg during an event marking the third anniversary of the attacks. Images showed Israeli and European Union flags on the floor after Hassan removed the Israeli flag from its stand. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said the allegations were being taken seriously and that appropriate procedures would be followed.
Hassan acknowledged removing the Israeli flag but disputed accounts that she deliberately knocked down the EU flag. Her office said the EU flag was attached to the same stand and fell accidentally because of the imbalance.
She also maintained that neither flag was damaged or trampled. Hassan said her action was intended to protest the organization of the exhibition in cooperation with Israel’s diplomatic representation and was not directed at the victims being commemorated.
The incident triggered criticism from several European lawmakers and Israeli officials. Metsola said Parliament would examine the circumstances and give Hassan an opportunity to present her side.
Under parliamentary procedures, potential disciplinary measures can include a reprimand, temporary restrictions on parliamentary activities or suspension of daily allowances.
The dispute has intensified political tensions within the European Parliament over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the commemoration of the October 7 attacks.
