The launch of the Islamabad–Tehran–Istanbul freight train service has been postponed due to security concerns, railway officials confirmed on Wednesday. The much-anticipated service, aimed at strengthening regional trade and connectivity, was originally scheduled to commence on Wednesday but has been deferred after the required security approvals were not granted.
According to the Railways Department, Pakistan Railways had earlier announced that the freight service would begin on December 31. However, officials said the absence of final security clearance necessitated the postponement of the launch. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of railway operations, cargo, and personnel along the route.
Under the original plan, the freight train was to depart from Islamabad and travel via Sibi to Spezand Junction. From there, it was scheduled to pass through Noshki and Dalbandin before crossing into Iran at Mirjawa. The route forms a key segment of the broader Islamabad–Tehran–Istanbul rail corridor, which is intended to provide a direct freight link between South Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
A spokesperson for Pakistan Railways said that all logistical and operational preparations for the train’s movement within the Quetta Division had been completed. Infrastructure readiness, coordination with relevant departments, and arrangements at key stations were in place, but the service could not proceed without full security approval.
The revival of the Islamabad–Tehran–Istanbul freight train has been a priority for regional cooperation. Earlier, Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi and Iran’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr Reza Amiri, had agreed to restore the service within the year to promote trade, reduce transportation costs, and improve economic linkages between the participating countries.
Railway sources said that a new launch date would be announced once the necessary security clearances are obtained. Officials remain optimistic that the service will commence soon, noting its importance for enhancing regional connectivity and facilitating cross-border freight movement.
