Police Detain 141 People Across Paris Region
More than 160 people were arrested in France after disturbances followed the national teamโs World Cup semifinal defeat to Spain.
France lost 2-0 on Tuesday, ending its hopes of reaching a third consecutive World Cup final. The result triggered unrest in parts of Paris and Lyon as crowds gathered following the match.
The Paris Police Prefecture confirmed that 141 people were detained across the capital and surrounding areas.
Most arrests were reportedly linked to the use of firework mortars. Authorities alleged that some fireworks were aimed at police officers and emergency workers.
Security personnel moved quickly to disperse groups involved in the disturbances. Police had already deployed thousands of officers across Paris because the match coincided with Franceโs Bastille Day celebrations.
Despite the confrontations, authorities reported no serious injuries. Officials also provided no immediate indication of major damage in the Paris region.
Those arrested may face questioning over the possession and use of fireworks, attacks on public officials and other public-order offences.
Riot Police Respond to Disturbances in Lyon
Several hundred people gathered at Place Bellecour in central Lyon to watch the highly anticipated semifinal.
The atmosphere reportedly changed after Spain secured victory. Small groups formed around the square, and some individuals allegedly threw fireworks and other projectiles toward police officers.
Riot police intervened to disperse the groups and restore order. Around 20 people were arrested in connection with the disturbances.
Reports said those detained in Lyon were born between 2002 and 2011. Authorities did not immediately provide their names or details about possible charges.
No injuries or significant property damage were reported in Lyon. Police maintained a presence in the area following the arrests to prevent further confrontations.
The unrest remained limited compared with the large number of supporters who watched the match peacefully.
Spain Ends Franceโs World Cup Dream With Dominant Victory
Spain secured a convincing 2-0 victory over France at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute. Pedro Porro added Spainโs second goal during the second half, completing a controlled semifinal performance.
Spain controlled possession, pressed France aggressively and restricted the attacking influence of Kylian Mbappe and his teammates.
The French attack had been considered one of the most dangerous in the tournament. However, Spainโs defensive organisation prevented France from finding a breakthrough.
The victory sent Spain into its first World Cup final since winning the tournament in 2010. The European champions are now one victory away from completing a World Cup and European Championship double.
Franceโs defeat ended its attempt to reach a third straight final after winning the tournament in 2018 and finishing as runner-up in 2022.
French authorities are expected to review security footage and continue investigations into the disturbances in Paris and Lyon.
