US President Donald Trump has blamed immigration for the widespread unrest in France, urging the French government to close its borders and tighten migration policies following violent protests across the country.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, October 18, Trump described France as a country in crisis and argued that immigration had contributed to its instability. He called on French authorities to take control of their borders before the situation deteriorated further.
The remarks came after demonstrations on Saturday escalated into violence, looting and arson in several French cities, including Paris, Marseille and Limoges.
According to French authorities, the protests attracted hundreds of thousands of demonstrators. While many participants marched peacefully, violent groups clashed with police, damaged businesses and targeted public buildings.
The unrest reportedly resulted in around 1,800 arrests nationwide, while security personnel and emergency workers sustained injuries. Limoges experienced significant damage after its historic town hall was set on fire.
However, the demonstrations stemmed from several domestic grievances, including rising living costs, deteriorating public services, poor school conditions and concerns over government spending.
Student groups and labour unions had called for action to improve education facilities and address economic pressures.
French officials have blamed extremist groups and criminal elements for the violence while pledging accountability for those responsible.
Trump’s comments have added an international dimension to France’s domestic crisis, intensifying debate over immigration, public security and the causes of the unrest.
