France has tightened security across major cities as authorities prepare for another wave of nationwide protests on Saturday, October 24. The government fears renewed violence following last weekend’s widespread unrest.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced the deployment of approximately 70,000 security personnel. Police, helicopters, and armored vehicles will monitor demonstrations across the country.
Authorities have strengthened security around government buildings and public spaces. Several businesses in central Paris have boarded up their entrances. The famous Louvre Museum and Musee d’Orsay have also closed as a precaution.
The protests initially began with high school students demanding better learning conditions. However, the movement quickly expanded as public anger grew over rising living costs and fuel prices.
More than half a million people participated in demonstrations last weekend. Violent clashes, property damage, and widespread looting followed some gatherings.
Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu warned that the risk of further violence remains high.
Meanwhile, authorities have imposed restrictions on demonstrations in several cities. Central areas of Lyon remain inaccessible to protesters. Police have also changed planned protest routes in Paris.
In Orleans, thousands are expected to demonstrate against Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party during its political gathering.
Human rights organizations have criticized the government’s security measures. Amnesty International warned that excessive restrictions could undermine the right to peaceful protest.
Human Rights Watch also urged police to protect demonstrators while preventing violence.
The growing unrest comes just six months before France’s presidential election. Recent opinion polls suggest Marine Le Pen remains a leading contender.
President Emmanuel Macron has met student representatives, but protesters continue demanding concrete government action.
France now faces mounting pressure to restore public order while protecting democratic freedoms.
