Locals Rescue Passengers After Van Plunges Into Roadside Drain
At least four tourists sustained injuries after a passenger vehicle caught fire and plunged into a roadside drain near the Express Khajut area of Murree on Wednesday, according to local reports.
The incident occurred when a Hiace van carrying tourists was travelling through the mountainous region. Eyewitnesses said flames suddenly erupted from the vehicle while it was on the road, creating panic among the passengers.
As the fire spread, the driver reportedly lost control of the van, causing it to veer off the roadway and fall into a drain alongside the route. Local residents quickly rushed to the scene and began rescue efforts before emergency responders arrived.
Residents helped evacuate the injured passengers from the damaged vehicle and transported them to a nearby hospital, where they received medical treatment. Officials said the injured tourists suffered various wounds, although no fatalities were reported.
Emergency Response Raises Concerns Following Incident
Meanwhile, authorities launched efforts to control the fire after receiving information about the accident. A fire vehicle from the Forest Department reached the scene and assisted in extinguishing the blaze, preventing it from spreading further.
However, reports indicated that Rescue 1122 teams did not arrive immediately after the incident, prompting concerns among witnesses regarding the emergency response time in the area.
Local residents played a crucial role during the initial stages of the rescue operation, providing assistance to passengers and helping secure the accident site until additional support arrived.
Authorities have begun gathering information about the circumstances surrounding the incident. Preliminary accounts suggest that the fire broke out while the vehicle was in motion, though the exact cause has not yet been confirmed.
The accident highlights the challenges of responding quickly to emergencies in hilly tourist destinations, particularly during periods of increased visitor traffic. Officials are expected to conduct a detailed investigation to determine the cause of the fire and assess whether mechanical failure or another factor contributed to the crash.
Meanwhile, authorities have urged motorists travelling through Murree and surrounding areas to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and roadworthy before undertaking long journeys.
