Multiple Quakes Shake Adana Province
Four shallow earthquakes struck parts of southern Turkey near Adana on Saturday, but authorities reported no injuries or damage.
Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said the earthquakes caused no adverse situation. The tremors were recorded across areas of Adana province within several hours.
Three earthquakes struck the Saimbeyli district. The first measured 4.8 magnitude and occurred at 2:19pm local time. A second earthquake, measuring 4.9, followed at 2:36pm.
A third earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 was recorded at 7:00pm.
5.2-Magnitude Earthquake Also Recorded
Another stronger earthquake struck the Sumbas district at 2:43pm. AFAD recorded the earthquake at 5.2 magnitude.
Sumbas is located around 80 kilometres south of the Saimbeyli area where the other three tremors were recorded.
Authorities said there were no reports of injuries, structural damage or other serious consequences following the earthquakes.
The relatively shallow earthquakes nevertheless prompted attention because southern Turkey remains highly vulnerable to seismic activity.
Region Still Remembers 2023 Earthquake Disaster
The affected area is around 150 kilometres from the epicentre of the devastating earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria in February 2023.
Those massive earthquakes killed at least 53,000 people in Turkey and caused widespread destruction across several provinces.
Turkey lies across several major geological fault lines. The country has experienced repeated powerful earthquakes over the years, making earthquake preparedness and monitoring a major national concern.
Saturday’s tremors did not result in a similar disaster, according to AFAD. Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity and assess any possible developments following the latest series of earthquakes.
