Pakistan is expected to appoint former South African first-class cricketer Mike Smith as the national Test team’s batting coach ahead of the upcoming three-match Test series against England.
The appointment is likely to be finalized after the remaining recruitment process is completed. If confirmed, Smith will join the coaching setup before Pakistan begins its challenging tour of England later this month.
The expected move reflects the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) efforts to strengthen the team’s batting unit before an important overseas assignment.
Mike Smith Expected to Join Pakistan Coaching Staff
Mike Smith is expected to take charge as Pakistan’s Test batting coach once the appointment process concludes.
The Level 4-qualified coach brings valuable experience to the role. Moreover, he is already familiar with Pakistan’s cricket environment through his previous coaching stint with Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
His experience in franchise cricket has given him an understanding of local players and the country’s cricket structure. Consequently, his transition into the national setup could be smoother.
The PCB believes experienced coaching personnel can play an important role in improving the team’s batting performance before the England series.
Interim Arrangement Since April
Former Pakistan batter Asad Shafiq has been serving as the team’s interim batting coach since April 2026.
He joined the coaching staff under Test head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed after taking over the temporary role.
During this period, Shafiq worked with Pakistan’s Test squad while the PCB continued its search for a permanent batting coach.
Meanwhile, the board initiated the recruitment process in May by inviting applications for the position.
The application deadline ended on June 7. Afterward, the PCB began evaluating candidates for the permanent appointment.
England Test Series Begins This Month
Pakistan’s upcoming Test series against England will begin later this month and presents a significant challenge for the visitors.
The opening Test will be played at Headingley in Leeds from August 19 to August 23.
After that, the second Test is scheduled at Lord’s from August 27 to August 31.
Finally, the third and deciding Test will take place at Edgbaston in Birmingham from September 9 to September 13.
The three-match series will provide Pakistan with an important opportunity to test its batting strength in English conditions.
PCB Eyes Stronger Batting Unit
Mike Smith’s expected appointment forms part of the PCB’s broader plan to strengthen Pakistan’s batting department before the demanding away series.
The board has focused on appointing a permanent specialist after relying on an interim arrangement for several months.
If the appointment is completed as expected, Smith will begin working with the squad before the opening Test against England.
His arrival could provide additional technical support as Pakistan prepares for one of its most important Test assignments of the year.
