Former American Idol contestant Caleb Flynn has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn, in Ohio.
The 40-year-old former music pastor received the sentence on Monday after an Ohio jury found him guilty of aggravated murder and several other charges. The case involved allegations of a staged home invasion and an extramarital affair.
Prosecutors Say Flynn Staged Home Invasion
Prosecutors said Flynn killed Ashley while she was sleeping at their home in Tipp City, Ohio, in February. He allegedly attempted to make the scene appear as though an intruder had entered the house.
Flynn then told authorities that a burglar was responsible for the shooting. Investigators later presented evidence that challenged his account.
Prosecutors said Flynn’s fingerprints and DNA were found at the scene. His electronic devices also reportedly showed movements that contradicted his claim that he was asleep when the shooting occurred.
Affair Became Key Part of Murder Case
During the trial, Alleigha Botner, who had an affair with Flynn, testified about their relationship and thousands of messages exchanged between them.
Prosecutors argued that Flynn wanted to end his marriage and presented messages in which he discussed his wife’s death. The prosecution said the affair provided a motive for the killing.
Ashley Flynn was 37 and worked as a schoolteacher and volleyball coach. The couple’s two young daughters were home when she was killed.
Flynn Maintains His Innocence
During sentencing, Flynn became emotional while addressing his family. He apologized to his daughters but continued to deny killing his wife.
Judge Jeannine Pratt condemned his actions, describing them as involving deception, manipulation and cruelty. Ashley’s family supported the maximum sentence while saying they wanted to preserve her legacy without hatred.
Flynn had appeared briefly on American Idol in 2013. His defense has indicated that he intends to continue fighting the conviction.
