Act sparks widespread praise and renews calls for stronger action against exploitative labour practices in Pakistan
KASUR: A foreign couple has received widespread praise in Pakistan after reportedly paying off the debt of a poor family in Kasur, ending generations of bonded labour linked to a brick kiln system that had allegedly trapped the family for more than a century.
According to local reports, the family had lived under a mounting debt burden for nearly 130 years after one of their ancestors allegedly borrowed a large sum decades ago. As a result, succeeding generations remained tied to the liability and struggled to escape the cycle.
Family members reportedly worked at a brick kiln without receiving wages in an attempt to repay the amount. However, the outstanding balance allegedly continued to rise over time because of accumulating interest and related charges.
Consequently, several generations spent their lives making bricks under harsh and difficult conditions while remaining unable to settle the debt. The situation, however, changed after a Western couple visiting Pakistan learned about the familyโs plight and decided to clear the entire amount.
Following the payment, the family reportedly gained freedom from bonded labour. Emotional scenes also emerged after the settlement, as one woman from the family embraced the foreign man while expressing gratitude and relief.
Meanwhile, the incident generated a strong response on social media. Many users described the act as a powerful example of humanity and compassion that transcended religion, race, and nationality.
At the same time, others expressed disappointment that no influential local figure had intervened earlier. Several users also urged authorities to intensify efforts against illegal and exploitative labour practices across the country.
