Ford and Lincoln have issued a recall for 116,672 vehicles equipped with engine block heaters that may crack and leak coolant, posing a potential fire risk. The recall comes as much of the country braces for bitter cold temperatures over the next week, affecting roughly 80% of the U.S. population.
The recall includes:
-
65,683 Ford Escapes (2013โ2019)
-
49,080 Ford Focuses (2013โ2018)
-
1,909 Lincoln MKC SUVs (2015โ2016)
According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), solder joints in the block heater can develop cracks that allow engine coolant to enter the heaterโs cord. As the coolant evaporates, electrically conductive deposits may accumulate, potentially causing a short circuit and a fire.
The fire risk only exists while the heater is plugged in, specifically when connected to a 110-volt outlet without a functional circuit breaker or GFCI.
Owners are advised to watch for warning signs, which may include:
-
Coolant spots on the pavement
-
Loss of cabin heat
-
Low coolant level
-
Engine overheating
-
Smoke or unusual odors near the block heater wiring
Ford plans to notify affected owners by mail in February, providing instructions to visit a local dealership. The company will replace the faulty engine block heater free of charge once updated units become available, expected in April.
This recall highlights the importance of monitoring block heaters, especially during winter months, when cold-weather use is most common.
