PESHAWAR: Flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall swept away a vehicle carrying Afghan families returning to their country in Landi Kotal tehsil of Khyber district on Monday. Rescue 1122 said emergency teams immediately launched a search operation after the incident near Sultan Khel Market.
Rescue operation continues after deadly flood
According to Rescue 1122, divers recovered the bodies of a man and a woman with assistance from local residents in Jamrud. Later, rescuers found the body of a child in the Parang Sang area. During the operation, rescue personnel also recovered the body of another man identified as a resident of Jamrud. Meanwhile, search efforts continue to locate other missing passengers.
In a separate incident, the roof of a room collapsed in Kalu Dheri village of Mardan, killing two children. Rescue officials said the children’s mother and their 14-year-old sister sustained injuries and were shifted to Mardan Medical Complex Hospital for treatment.
Authorities issue weather warnings
Following forecasts of widespread rainfall, Rescue 1122 has placed emergency teams across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on high alert. Director General Shah Fahad directed district emergency officers to ensure rapid response and deploy rescue boats, vehicles and specialized equipment in vulnerable areas.
Additionally, water rescue teams continue patrolling rivers, streams and flood-prone locations. Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from waterways and contact the 1122 helpline during emergencies.
The Peshawar Electric Supply Company has activated its emergency control room. The company has advised people to follow safety precautions during the ongoing rains.
