ISLAMABAD: At least 27 people, including women and children, were killed late Thursday as torrential rains triggered flash floods and landslides across Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur district.
In GB’s Ghizer district, three people—including a woman—died in Khalthi Valley when several homes were buried under debris, with three others still missing, government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq said. Landslides and flooding also caused devastation in Yasin Thoi, Diamer, Astore Valley, and other areas, damaging houses, schools, farmland, and vital roads, including the Baltistan and Sadpara routes. In Kohistan, a bridge collapse on the Karakoram Highway cut off traffic between GB and the rest of the country.
AJK reported at least eight deaths, including six members of the same family killed in a cloudburst in Muzaffarabad’s Naseerabad Tehsil. Heavy rains caused rivers to overflow in Bagh, Samahni, Jhelum Valley, and Neelum Valley, damaging dozens of homes and shops. Mobile networks went down in several mountainous regions, while over 700 tourists were stranded in Neelum Valley after a cloudburst washed away road sections.
In Bajaur district, flash floods and landslides claimed nine lives and injured four, as surging waters swept through villages, destroying homes.
Emergency measures have been enforced in affected areas, with disaster management authorities and rescue teams working in difficult weather conditions. The AJK government has announced school closures for August 15 and 16 due to the ongoing threat of floods and landslides.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned of further heavy rainfall in Islamabad, AJK, upper Punjab, KP, and GB from August 14 to 17, raising fears of more damage in the days ahead.
