High-speed crash on Kala Khatai Road triggers rescue operation and fresh road safety concerns
SHAKARGARH: At least five people, including a bus driver, lost their lives and several others sustained injuries after two passenger buses collided head-on on Kala Khatai Road near Shakargarh on Tuesday, according to rescue officials and eyewitnesses.
The buses, operating between Sukhuchak and Dhodochak villages and travelling toward Lahore, crashed after both drivers reportedly attempted to avoid a motorcycle that suddenly came onto the road. Witnesses said both vehicles were travelling at high speed when the drivers lost control, resulting in a devastating collision.
Emergency responders and local authorities rushed to the accident site soon after receiving reports of the crash. Rescue teams provided first aid to the injured before shifting them to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, while officials secured the area and began collecting evidence.
Victims identified as investigation continues
Authorities identified three of the deceased as Abrar Ali, son of Muhammad Sarwar and a resident of Shakargarh, along with Abdullah and Azim, both residents of Zafarwal. One of the victims was the driver of one of the buses, while officials have yet to confirm the identity of another deceased person.
Hospital authorities continued treating the injured, some of whom reportedly suffered serious injuries. Officials said the death toll could change depending on the condition of those receiving medical care.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the collision. Investigators are examining witness statements and other available evidence to establish whether speeding, negligence or additional factors contributed to the crash.
Road safety concerns resurface
Meanwhile, the fatal accident has once again highlighted the growing concern over road safety in Pakistan, where speeding and reckless driving continue to cause deadly traffic accidents every year.
Traffic safety experts have repeatedly urged authorities to strengthen enforcement of speed limits, improve driver training and increase monitoring on major highways and intercity routes to reduce preventable crashes.
Officials have appealed to motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic regulations and avoid excessive speed, particularly on busy roads, to help prevent similar tragedies in the future as the investigation into Tuesday’s deadly collision continues.
