Spectacular celestial event to be visible across Pakistan and worldwide
Stargazers in Pakistan and around the globe are in for a treat as the first supermoon of 2025 will be visible on Tuesday night, October 7, according to the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco).
This is the first of three supermoons set to appear this year. The moon will reach its closest point to Earth — known as perigee — at exactly 8:47 PM (Pakistan Standard Time), creating a bright and noticeably larger full moon.
A supermoon occurs when the moon’s elliptical orbit brings it closer to Earth during its full phase. This makes it appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than a regular full moon.
Suparco confirmed that this particular supermoon will be about 224,599 miles (361,457 km) from Earth, making it 6.6% larger and 13% brighter than an average full moon.
Moon to appear alongside Saturn in rare visual pairing
Adding to the visual spectacle, Saturn will be visible near the Moon, appearing to the west of the lunar disc on Monday and Tuesday evening, giving astronomy enthusiasts a bonus celestial sight.
According to Suparco, the brightest supermoon of the year is expected on November 5, when the moon will be even closer — just 221,817 miles (356,980 km) from Earth. The third and final supermoon will follow on December 5.
This astronomical event will be visible across Pakistan, including major cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, as well as globally, offering a stunning view for skywatchers — weather permitting.
In 2023, Pakistan witnessed a rare “super blue moon,” while a blood moon lunar eclipse in September was obscured by heavy clouds in Karachi.
