A fire erupted at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation head office on Tuesday, gutting Mayor Murtaza Wahab’s office. The blaze also destroyed records stored inside the office, according to officials.
The fire department said flames started in a kitchen located next to the mayor’s office. Soon afterwards, rescue teams reached the KMC building and launched firefighting operations. They brought the blaze under control before it could spread further.
Officials have not yet disclosed the cause of the fire. Authorities are expected to assess the extent of damage and investigate how the blaze started. Meanwhile, the destruction of official records has raised concerns about the impact on municipal operations.
Firefighters Control Blaze at KMC Headquarters
According to initial information, the fire remained concentrated around the area adjacent to the mayor’s office. Emergency teams responded quickly after receiving information about the incident. Consequently, firefighters managed to contain the flames and prevent wider damage.
The incident comes a day after another major fire hit Karachi. On September 7, a blaze erupted at an old-clothes factory in the Landhi Export Processing Zone. The fire later spread to a neighbouring factory.
Previous Karachi Factory Fire Raises Concerns
Rescue 1122 officials said part of the affected factory building collapsed during the incident. The factory consisted of a ground floor and two upper storeys. Meanwhile, firefighters faced intense smoke while battling the flames from outside.
The fire initially started on the ground floor before spreading to the upper levels. Despite the scale of the blaze and building collapse, officials reported no loss of life.
Both incidents highlight ongoing concerns about fire safety and emergency preparedness in Karachi. Authorities will now investigate the KMC fire and determine the extent of the damage.
