Col Sofiya Qureshi
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a senior officer and spokesperson for the Indian Army, has found herself at the center of a political and legal storm following derogatory remarks made by BJP minister Vijay Shah.
During a controversial public statement, Shah referred to Col Qureshi as a “sister of terrorists,” an inflammatory comment that drew widespread condemnation and triggered legal proceedings against him.
The remarks, made in reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to assign Col Qureshi a significant role, suggested that Modi had “deployed the sister of terrorists, Colonel Qureshi, to teach a lesson.” This statement was swiftly condemned across political and public spheres, especially given Col Qureshi’s respected standing in the armed forces.
The Indian National Congress responded with a strong protest in Madhya Pradesh. During the demonstration, Congress workers expressed their outrage by blackening Vijay Shah’s nameplate and raising slogans such as “Modi Sarkar Murdabad” (Down with Modi Government) and “Vijay Shah Murdabad.” The party accused the BJP of defaming a serving army officer and playing politics with national institutions.
The controversy gained significant traction on social media, where users across platforms condemned the minister’s words and expressed solidarity with Col Qureshi. Many highlighted her contributions and dedication to the nation’s defense and called the comment a blatant attack on the integrity of the armed forces.
Amid the growing backlash, Vijay Shah issued a public apology, stating that his words were misinterpreted and not intended to insult the army or its officers. However, the damage had already been done.
In a significant development, the Madhya Pradesh High Court took suo motu notice of the incident, recognizing the seriousness of the matter. The court directed local law enforcement to register a First Information Report (FIR) against Shah for his defamatory remarks targeting Col Qureshi.
Legal experts and political analysts view the court’s intervention as a crucial step toward holding public officials accountable for defamatory and divisive rhetoric.
Meanwhile, supporters of Col Qureshi continue to call for justice and demand respect for those who serve in uniform without becoming pawns in political narratives.
