FIFA has launched an investigation into an on-pitch altercation involving Argentine and Spanish players after their World Cup final in New Jersey.
Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time to claim their second world title and dethrone the defending South American champions.
However, celebrations quickly turned chaotic when players and staff from both teams became involved in a multi-player brawl.
FIFA confirmed on Monday that its Disciplinary Committee had reviewed match reports concerning the post-match incidents.
“FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC,” FIFA told Al Jazeera.
The governing body said the investigation would focus on incidents that occurred after the final whistle.
Moreover, FIFA said it would release the findings and results once officials complete the disciplinary process.
Spain’s celebrations became overshadowed by the confrontation, which followed several heated exchanges during the intense final.
When the referee ended extra time, some players fell to the ground while celebrating victory or expressing their disappointment.
However, several others quickly became involved in physical confrontations near the pitch.
Video footage shared widely online showed Spanish forward Lamine Yamal kneeling and raising his hands in prayer.
Meanwhile, multiple fights appeared to erupt behind him as tensions between the teams reached their peak.
The incident added an ugly ending to an otherwise dramatic final that Spain ultimately controlled through extra time.
FIFA’s investigation could now determine whether players or officials face disciplinary action for their involvement in the post-match violence.
