Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir has been greeted in the United States with a digital tribute at New York City’s iconic Times Square, where a video campaign in his honor is being displayed throughout his week-long visit.
The campaign features images of Field Marshal Munir—who was recently elevated to the rank of Field Marshal—alongside the Pakistani flag. It also includes visuals of him meeting with U.S. senators and interacting with Pakistani children, portraying Pakistan as a modern, forward-looking nation focused on education, innovation, and peace.
His visit to the U.S. is reported to be at the invitation of the American military leadership. The Times Square tribute, expected to run for a full week, was organized to acknowledge Munir’s leadership, particularly his widely commended role in the recent tensions with India.
Ahead of his arrival in Washington, General Michael Kurilla, Commander of the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), commended Field Marshal Munir and the Pakistan Army for their cooperation in counterterrorism efforts.
While speaking before the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, General Kurilla described Pakistan as an “outstanding partner” in the fight against Daesh-Khorasan. He highlighted the Pakistani military’s success in eliminating dozens of militants and capturing several high-value individuals through joint intelligence operations.
Kurilla specifically cited the arrest of Mohammad Sharifullah, also known as Jafar, who is believed to be involved in the 2021 suicide bombing at Kabul Airport that resulted in the deaths of 13 U.S. military personnel and over 160 civilians. He revealed that after the arrest, Munir promptly contacted him, stating: “I’ve caught him. I’m ready to extradite him to the U.S. Please inform the Secretary of Defense and the President.”
