ISLAMABAD: Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir is visiting Tehran today as Pakistan intensifies diplomatic efforts to revive stalled negotiations between the United States and Iran.
The visit comes amid rising regional tensions and follows earlier discussions between Munir and Iranian leaders during the summer. Those talks focused on preventing further escalation, reopening the strategically important Strait of Hormuz and finding a way to end the ongoing conflict.
Pakistan has played a key mediating role between Washington and Tehran since the conflict began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February. Islamabad has continued efforts to bring both sides back to negotiations despite persistent disagreements over the terms of a settlement.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently reiterated Tehran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, provided Washington accepts Iran’s conditions. These include lifting the US blockade on Iranian ports, easing sanctions on Iranian oil exports and ending hostilities across regional fronts.
However, negotiations remain stalled because the two sides disagree over priorities. Washington wants Iran’s nuclear programme addressed as a central issue, while Tehran insists that maritime security and the blockade should be resolved first.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has stressed that achieving peace requires patience, mutual trust and sustained diplomatic engagement. He also acknowledged Qatar’s role in supporting mediation efforts.
Munir’s visit is expected to provide an opportunity for further consultations on regional security and diplomatic options. However, no breakthrough has been announced, and the prospects for resuming formal US-Iran negotiations remain uncertain.
