Ferrari has officially ended its association with Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu, who served as a reserve driver for the Scuderia during the 2025 Formula 1 season. The decision comes as Ferrari finalizes its preparations for the 2026 campaign and builds a new lineup of drivers and reserves. Zhou, 26, joined Ferrari’s reserve program in 2025 alongside Antonio Giovinazzi after losing his Sauber (now Alfa Romeo) race seat at the end of 2024.
The Chinese racer has long-standing ties with Ferrari, having been part of the Ferrari Driver Academy from 2014 to 2018. During his time as a reserve driver, Zhou aimed to leverage the role to maintain visibility in the paddock while working toward securing a full-time seat in Formula 1 for the 2026 season.
Zhou’s Farewell and Ferrari’s Statement
Ferrari publicly thanked Zhou for his contribution, posting on social media: “Grateful for Zhou Guanyu’s commitment and contribution as Ferrari Reserve Driver this season! Wishing him all the best ahead.”
Zhou responded to the message, writing: “Grazie! All the best guys, see you around!” The brief exchange highlighted mutual respect and Zhou’s gratitude for the opportunity, even as his immediate F1 future remains uncertain.
Despite his departure, Zhou emphasized the value of the experience. In an interview with F1.com, he explained that being a reserve driver allows him to stay active in the paddock and maintain visibility among teams and sponsors. “It’s important just to stay in the paddock and let more people understand the driver you are,” Zhou said, underlining that the role helps maintain professional momentum even without a racing seat.
Missed Opportunity with Cadillac
Zhou had hoped that his reserve role might pave the way to a full-time drive in 2026. Cadillac’s newly formed Formula 1 team was among the potential options for him. However, the team opted for former Red Bull driver Sergio Perez and Zhou’s ex-Sauber teammate Valtteri Bottas instead. This decision left Zhou without a confirmed seat for the upcoming season, marking a setback in his efforts to return to the grid.
While losing his racing seat is a disappointment, Zhou remains committed to staying involved in F1. The driver has not yet announced his next move but indicated he is open to opportunities that allow him to remain active in the sport. His experience with Ferrari, he said, will continue to be a valuable asset as he seeks the next step in his Formula 1 career.
Zhou’s departure may have little impact on Ferrari, but it is a significant moment for the Chinese F1 star, highlighting the highly competitive nature of securing seats in the sport and the challenges of staying in the top tier of racing.
