KHANPUR, Punjab: A female cop posted at Islamgarh Police Station in Khanpur, Punjab, attempted suicide over her forced marriage. He was rushed to hospital for medical treatment.
The police constable Saba Kanwal at the police station when the incident occurred. The station house officer and other colleagues took her to a hospital, where doctors initially described her condition as critical.
Earlier, a video statement attributed to Kanwal surfaced in which she claimed that her parents had forced her into marriage with her paternal cousin against her wishes.
She further alleged that her husband and in-laws subjected her to violence and issued death threats. Kanwal said she returned to her parents’ home seeking protection but claimed she also felt unsafe around her brothers.
In the video, she appealed to the Punjab government to provide her protection and expressed concerns about being placed under the care of family members.
Khanpur SDPO Shahid Nazir said Kanwal had been temporarily transferred to police headquarters following the incident. He added that authorities were handling the matter cautiously and taking her wishes and consent into account.
Police sources said Kanwal had not previously filed an official complaint concerning alleged abuse or harassment. However, the absence of a formal complaint does not establish whether the allegations occurred.
The allegations made by Kanwal have not been independently verified. Authorities have not publicly disclosed further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident or any investigation into her claims. Kanwal was later discharged from hospital after receiving medical treatment.
