ISLAMABAD: The Federal Constitutional Court rejected an application filed by former prime minister Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, seeking suspension of her sentence in the £190 million Al-Qadir Trust case.
A two-member bench headed by Chief Justice Aminuddin Khan announced the decision today. Justice Ali Baqar Najafi was also part of the bench.
During the hearing, Bushra Bibi’s counsel, Barrister Salman Safdar, argued that courts had traditionally shown leniency towards women in legal proceedings. He maintained that his client deserved relief and that sufficient legal grounds existed to suspend her sentence.
The lawyer also criticised the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), alleging that the accountability watchdog had repeatedly sought adjournments during the past 13 months and opposed the application for sentence suspension.
However, Chief Justice Aminuddin Khan advised the defence counsel to focus on the legal questions concerning sentence suspension rather than discussing the merits of the main case. Justice Baqar Najafi also asked how many times the main appeal had been scheduled for hearing.
An accountability court in Islamabad sentenced Bushra Bibi to seven years in prison and imposed a Rs500,000 fine in January 2025. Imran Khan received a 14-year prison sentence and a Rs1 million fine in the same case.
The Al-Qadir Trust case concerns allegations surrounding the handling of £190 million returned to Pakistan by Britain’s National Crime Agency during Imran Khan’s government.
The court’s decision marks another legal setback for Bushra Bibi as proceedings concerning the convictions continue.
