Talks with authorities lead to temporary suspension of demonstration
KARACHI: The family of Dr Akash on Monday called off its protest at Teen Talwar after successful negotiations with Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, who assured them of his full support in pursuing justice and expediting the investigation into the doctor’s killing.
According to the family, the decision to suspend the demonstration came after the mayor pledged to meet Sindh Inspector General of Police and personally facilitate efforts to ensure meaningful progress in the case.
The family said it would determine its next course of action after holding discussions with the provincial police chief. Until then, the protest at Teen Talwar has been temporarily suspended.
Following the conclusion of the demonstration, volunteers shifted Dr Akash’s body from the protest site to the Chhipa morgue.
Police continue search for robbery suspects
Police said Dr Akash was fatally shot during an alleged robbery near Teen Talwar in Karachi’s Clifton area shortly after withdrawing cash from a nearby bank.
According to investigators, the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Frere Police Station. Officials said Dr Akash had withdrawn Rs5 million and was driving away in his Alto car when armed assailants intercepted his vehicle near the bank.
The suspects allegedly robbed him of Rs2.5 million before opening fire and fleeing the scene. Bank security guards reportedly returned fire in an attempt to stop the attackers, but the suspects escaped before law enforcement personnel arrived.
Meanwhile, police have launched a comprehensive investigation and are reviewing available evidence, including CCTV footage, to identify those involved in the robbery and killing.
Authorities said efforts are underway to trace and arrest the suspects, while senior officials have assured the victim’s family that the investigation will continue until those responsible are brought to justice.
