Judicial Remand
An Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) sent human rights lawyer Imaan Mazari on a 14-day judicial remand in a case accusing her of collecting money for anti-state activities.
The ATC initially granted her bail in another case related to her participation in a protest organized by the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement in the federal capital. However, Islamabad police arrested her shortly after on an FIR registered at the Bara Kahu police station under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).
Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain presented Mazari before the court, which approved her judicial remand. The next bail application hearing is scheduled for Monday, and she will be held at Islamabad’s Women’s Police Station until then.
Following the expiration of Imaan’s three-day physical remand, her counsel filed a petition in the ATC to expedite the bail hearing, requesting it for today or tomorrow.
Lawyer Zainab Janjua conveyed this request to the judge in his chamber, but as the judge was unavailable on both days, the court decided to schedule the hearing for Monday.
Lawyer Qaiser Imam also noted Imaan’s deteriorating medical condition and requested the court to keep her at Islamabad’s Women’s Police Station. Judge Zulqarnain announced that he would make a decision on the case after listening to arguments on Monday.
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) previously restricted authorities from moving Imaan out of the federal capital while she was under arrest. Justice Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb heard Imaan’s plea to access details of all cases against her.
Imaan’s mother, former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and federal human rights minister, Shireen Mazari, appeared before the court with her lawyers Salman Akram Raja and Qaiser Imam.
The lawyers clarified that they submitted the plea because Imaan faced three cases, including charges of terrorism and sedition. She obtained bail in each of them but faced a re-arrest in a third case upon her release from Adiala jail.
