Prolonged exposure to loud noise can result in a variety of health complications, including sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, heightened stress, anxiety, neurosis, sleep disturbances, and impaired memory and concentration, according to Dr Anastasia Beketova, an otolaryngologist and audiology specialist.
Dr Beketova explained that the human body instinctively responds to loud sounds as a defense mechanism. This reaction, she said, serves a critical role in alerting individuals to potential dangers in their surroundings. “For example, the blaring horns of cars or trains at crossings are designed to ensure public safety by heightening awareness,” she noted.
While noise pollution has become an almost unavoidable part of urban life, Dr Beketova emphasized that its harmful effects persist. Excessive noise can lead to diminished cognitive function, trouble absorbing new information, chronic fatigue, headaches, and increased irritability.
She pointed out that those working in noisy environments—such as industrial or construction zones—tend to experience these negative health impacts more quickly. However, city dwellers are not immune, as continuous urban noise also puts them at risk.
According to Dr Beketova, various regulations determine acceptable noise exposure based on workplace conditions and job intensity. Generally, in industrial settings, noise levels should not surpass 80 decibels during an eight-hour shift. Acceptable limits often fall within a range of 50 to 80 decibels, depending on the specific activity.
She also outlined thresholds for short-term and peak noise exposure. Intermittent noise should stay below 110 decibels, while maximum impulse noise—such as sudden, sharp bursts—must not exceed 125 decibels.
Dr Beketova’s warning underscores the importance of noise control measures and protective equipment, particularly for those working in high-decibel environments or living in densely populated urban area
