Former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina has reaffirmed her intention to return home in December. She remains determined despite facing a death sentence over her government’s deadly crackdown on protesters.
In an email interview, Hasina said her decision had not changed despite the risks awaiting her. She acknowledged that authorities could arrest, imprison, torture or even kill her after returning.
“If death is my destiny, I would rather die on the soil of my own country, among my own people,” she said. Hasina added that she could not spend the rest of her life watching her people suffer from a distance.
The former leader fled Bangladesh in August 2024 after student-led protests forced her government from power. She has since remained in India, while Bangladeshi authorities have repeatedly sought her extradition.
Death Sentence and Legal Challenges
A special tribunal sentenced Hasina to death in November 2025 for crimes against humanity. The court held her responsible for the deadly crackdown during the 2024 uprising.
However, Hasina has denied wrongdoing and rejected the verdict. She has also questioned the legitimacy of the trial and described the proceedings as politically motivated.
A United Nations investigation estimated that nearly 1,400 people died during the unrest. Hundreds more suffered injuries as security forces responded to demonstrations.
Bangladesh has repeatedly requested her extradition, but India has not handed her over. Hasina has not disclosed how she intends to travel back.
Political Situation Remains Uncertain
Meanwhile, Bangladesh has undergone major political changes since her removal. The Awami League remains banned, and the party could not contest February’s general election.
Tarique Rahman became prime minister after his party secured victory. Hasina has accused the authorities of suppressing her supporters and restricting political freedoms.
She also said she did not need foreign powers’ approval to return home. Nevertheless, her proposed return could create fresh legal and political challenges.
Her December plans remain unchanged, although no travel arrangements have been announced.
