European Union ambassadors, including Romania’s ambassador, met Pakistan’s newly appointed Foreign Secretary, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, in Islamabad to discuss ways to strengthen political and economic relations between Pakistan and the European Union.
The meeting focused on expanding political dialogue, improving trade cooperation and utilising opportunities under the European Union’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) programme. Moreover, participants discussed shared priorities and explored practical ways to strengthen cooperation between both sides.
EU and Pakistan Discuss Economic Cooperation
The meeting included Additional Secretary Ayesha Ali, Director General Europe I Ishtiak Ahmed Akil and other senior diplomats. During the discussions, officials exchanged views on improving bilateral engagement and expanding economic opportunities.
Furthermore, the participants highlighted the importance of maintaining regular diplomatic contact to address shared challenges and support mutual interests. They also explored ways to strengthen existing partnerships through trade, investment and broader cooperation.
The GSP+ programme remained an important topic because it provides Pakistan with preferential access to European markets, creating opportunities for exporters and businesses.
Romania Highlights Port Connectivity and Bilateral Ties
Romania’s ambassador expressed his country’s willingness to deepen political relations and economic cooperation with Pakistan. In particular, he highlighted the potential of an agreement between Romania’s Constanța port and Karachi port to improve connectivity and commercial exchanges.
The proposed port cooperation could strengthen trade links, facilitate business activities and create additional opportunities for economic collaboration. Additionally, stronger maritime connections could support closer commercial engagement between the two countries.
“Building stronger partnerships through dialogue, trade and connectivity is the way forward,” the ambassador said.
Romania reaffirmed its commitment to promoting closer engagement between Pakistan and the European Union. It also expressed support for practical initiatives that strengthen political relations, economic partnerships and people-to-people connections.
