South Africa’s Mia le Roux has withdrawn from the upcoming Miss Universe finals in Mexico, citing health concerns, organizers confirmed.
The 28-year-old beauty queen, who made history as the first deaf woman to be crowned Miss South Africa, expressed her regret over the decision, acknowledging the dreams and expectations placed upon her.
“Making this decision has been incredibly challenging, knowing the dreams and hopes that have been placed upon me,” she said in a statement. “However, I am deeply grateful to have the opportunity to focus on my health and recovery so that I may continue to serve my country with full strength.”
While le Roux has not disclosed the specifics of her health issue, the Miss South Africa organization emphasized its full support for her well-being, vowing to assist her during her recovery. They praised her for her “incredible courage and grace” and extended their heartfelt wishes for her to regain full health.
Le Roux’s victory as Miss South Africa was historic, not only for her trailblazing role as a deaf beauty queen but also amid controversy surrounding her win, which included the withdrawal of another finalist following trolling over her Nigerian heritage.
The Miss South Africa organization reiterated its commitment to le Roux’s journey, stating, “Our hearts are with her as she takes the necessary steps toward recovery.”
Before the withdrawal, le Roux had expressed excitement about representing South Africa at Miss Universe, calling it a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to amplify her voice and showcase her country’s “beautiful diversity.”
Diagnosed with profound hearing loss at the age of one, le Roux uses a cochlear implant to assist with hearing, symbolizing resilience and determination as she continues to break barriers in both the pageant world and beyond.
