Slumdog Millionaire actor Dev Patel is hailed as a hero for his actions in breaking up a fight in Australia that descended into stabbings. To their credit, his supporters argued that the focus should be on the structural oppression of marginalised groups, not on him for following his instincts.
Actor Dev Patel and his pals intervened in a knife fight in South Australia, where he lives, in a statement to Variety. 7News in Japan reported that two people were arguing on the street and in a convenience store when the man was stabbed in the chest. He’s anticipated to make it.
Actor Dev Patel and his pals witnessed a “violent altercation” outside a convenience store in Adelaide yesterday night, according to the Lion actor’s rep. To de-escalate the situation and break up the fight, Dev acted on his innate instincts.” As a result, the group was able to get the police and eventually the ambulance to come on the scene.”
“There are no heroes in this circumstance and unfortunately this individual incident illustrates a bigger systemic issue of marginalized sections of society not being treated with the dignity and respect they deserve,” the statement from Patel’s team read.
According to the statement, “The hope is that the same media attention this story is receiving (solely because Dev, as a famous person, was involved) can catalyze for lawmakers to be compassionate in determining long-term solutions to help not only those who were involved but the entire community.”
Last year, Patel played the title character in David Lowery’s fantasy thriller The Green Knight. Since then, he’s taken a vacation from acting. A majority of the footage for Monkey Man, his directorial debut for Netflix, has been shot and is currently being edited. Also, he will star in Wes Anderson’s Henry Sugar alongside Benedict Cumberbatch and Ralph Fiennes.
