Pakistani actor Meera, whose real name is Syeda Irtiza Rubab, has faced a prolonged struggle with UK immigration authorities, resulting in a 10-year entry ban. Known for her prominent work in Lollywood and modeling career, Meera remains a celebrated figure in Pakistan and internationally.
The entry ban was imposed reportedly due to confusion during an English-language interview with UK immigration officers. Meera’s family claims the misunderstanding arose when she failed to comprehend the officer’s questions, leading to “restriction of movements.”
Meera’s mother, Shafqat Zahra Bukhari, has appealed to the UK High Commission in Pakistan to grant the actor a visa so she can reunite with her family and work on pending film projects. “The entry ban is finished. Meera should be allowed to enter the UK. There are several film projects she plans to do in the UK. These projects are on hold because Meera has a central role,” her mother stated.
After the 10-year ban ended, Meera’s travel agent submitted a visa application, but it was denied due to “false representation” of information in the application. Meera confirmed that she intends to properly reapply for a visa with the help of a newly hired lawyer. Geo News reported this development on Wednesday.
Family Connections in the UK and Europe
Meera’s family has deep ties to the UK and Europe. Her younger sister resides in Germany, while her youngest sister, a qualified solicitor, lives in London. Meera’s mother also spends much of her time in London, in a house purchased years ago using Meera’s earnings, in anticipation that Meera would eventually stay there during visits. However, the entry ban derailed those plans. Despite this setback, Meera continues to visit the US frequently, as she holds a Green Card.
The Ban’s Origins
Recalling the incident that led to the ban, Meera’s mother explained: “The immigration officer at Heathrow Airport asked her about ‘transit,’ but Meera misunderstood and kept referring to ‘transaction.’ There was a communication gap, and Meera also failed to provide my full name when asked. Both sides misunderstood each other, which ultimately led to the ban.”
At the time, Meera’s proficiency in English was limited, but her mother emphasized that her language skills have significantly improved during her decade-long stay in the US. “She speaks fluently now. Several businessmen and investors want to work with Meera on film projects in the UK, but everything is stalled because of her visa issues,” she added.
Meera’s Contribution and Resilience
Describing Meera’s role in the family, her mother said, “Meera is the breadwinner and takes care of the entire family. She is the kindest person you will meet—she even kisses my feet. Allah has blessed her, and she has made us prosperous.” She also praised Meera’s media-savvy nature, saying, “Meera knows how to stay in the limelight. She understands how to navigate controversy and remain relevant.”
Next Steps
Meera confirmed she has hired a new lawyer to oversee her latest visa application. Her mother expressed hope that the UK government would recognize Meera’s contributions as a global artist and grant her a visa to resume her professional commitments in the UK.
