Amidst the recent controversy in Pakistan, actress Sanam Saeed has expressed her satisfaction with the response to her web series Barzakh. Despite the backlash, Saeed mentioned that the feedback from viewers was in line with her expectations.
In an interview with Indian media, Saeed described the reaction to Barzakh as “overwhelming” and noted that the show’s unique elements had captivated the audience. She acknowledged that while some viewers initially struggled to understand the show, a careful watch would reveal its full depth. The audience’s response, she felt, matched their expectations perfectly.
Addressing her Indian followers, Saeed fondly referred to them as “long-lost siblings” due to their shared cultural heritage. She reflected on how, despite growing up in different environments, they both come from the same roots and expressed warmth in reconnecting with these “siblings.”
Directed by Asim Abbasi, known for Churails and Cake, Barzakh has sparked significant discussion due to its bold exploration of controversial topics, including non-heteronormative storylines.
In response to the backlash, Zindagi announced that Barzakh would no longer be available on YouTube in Pakistan starting August 9. The decision was made due to prevailing public sentiment, according to a statement on Zindagi’s Instagram. The last episode, which aired on August 6, will be inaccessible to Pakistani viewers until August 9.
The show has polarized opinions: while some have lauded the performances and storytelling, others have criticized it for not aligning with “family-friendly” values. Abbasi has defended his creative choices, stating, “If you find queer or non-heteronormative storylines ‘distasteful,’ please avoid my content. I will always advocate for the rights of all and continue to tell stories that matter to us.”
Some Pakistani viewers have called for a boycott, claiming the show goes against Islamic values. Despite the controversy, Saeed remains positive, grateful for the support, and pleased with the feedback she has received.
