Amid a troubling increase in harassment cases, actor Mariyam Nafees has openly shared her concerns about women’s safety, attributing the issue to societal attitudes, particularly those of men.
In a candid interview on a digital magazine’s podcast, Nafees, known for her role in Jaan-e-Jahan, addressed the pervasive insecurity women face in a male-dominated society. She expressed that women generally do not feel safe, stating, “As women, we don’t feel secure.”
Nafees emphasized that this insecurity goes beyond concerns about theft or assault. “If you ask any group of 6-8 women whether they feel safe walking alone on the street, the answer will be no,” she explained. “It’s not just about avoiding danger but about the basic freedom to walk alone without fear.”
The actor pointed out that this sense of insecurity is a result of societal behaviors and norms enforced by men. She clarified that her comments are directed at a significant portion of men, rather than all men. “It’s not about all men, but a majority, and I won’t deny it,” she said.
Nafees highlighted a disparity in societal expectations, noting that men often have the freedom to move about without restrictions, even in less clothing, while women are bound by fears and limitations.
She called for a more balanced approach to raising children, emphasizing that both sons and daughters should face equal expectations and restrictions.
“Raise your sons well,” Nafees urged, stressing the need for equal principles and teachings for both genders.
“We focus on guiding our daughters but give sons unbounded freedom. It’s essential that all rules and regulations be the same for both sons and daughters to create a safer environment for everyone.”
Nafees concluded with a call for societal change, advocating for conditions that allow women the freedom of movement without the need to impose strict return times for daughters.
