Since an operation in 2018 to get rid of jihadists, Hajar al-Aswad, near the Syrian capital, has been a ghost town. However, it is now the site of an action movie made by Jackie Chan.
The Home Operation is based on China’s 2015 operation to get Chinese and other foreign citizens out of the war in Yemen. This was a big deal for Beijing, and Home Operation was inspired by it.
Some scenes are being shot in Syria because Yemen was ruled too dangerous to film in. The script only mentions a made-up country called Poman, however.
On Thursday, the ruins of Hajar al-Aswad were full of actors dressed in Yemeni tribal clothes, Syrian extras in uniform, and Chinese film crew members in polo shirts. Jackie Chan is the main producer, although there are no plans for him to visit Syria.
The movie is being marketed as a big hit that will show how heroic the Chinese government was during an evacuation.
Director Yinxi Song told reporters that the movie was propaganda as his crew set up their gear and tanks with hastily changed paint jobs moved into place.
