The 2024 HUM Awards took place on Sunday night in London, and it was clear that the event lacked the expected fashion flair. This wasn’t the HUM Style Awards, as style was noticeably absent.
While reviewing the attendees’ outfits, it became evident that most fell somewhere between mediocre and outright misses. Although awards were handed out, the fashion choices left much to be desired, turning what should have been a glamorous celebration of Pakistani talent into a display of underwhelming ensembles.
Let’s break down the fashion highlights and lowlights.
The Good and the Acceptable
- Mahira Khan: As the queen of Pakistani entertainment, Mahira Khan dazzled in a stunning rose gold gown by Faraz Manan. Featuring a beaded bodice and a flowing silk skirt, her look was complemented by a matching dupatta. However, comparisons to Bollywood’s Ananya Panday, who also wore Manan, revealed that Panday’s attire appeared more polished and luxurious. Despite some issues with the bodice’s length and stitching, Mahira’s impeccable makeup and voluminous hair made her look beautiful.
- Kubra Khan: Kubra Khan sparkled in a pink gown from Esteles London, which was lovely overall. However, minor design flaws, such as excessive fabric at the bottom and poorly stitched chest panels, detracted from the look. With better tailoring, it could have been perfect, but as it stood, it felt rushed.
- Hania Aamir: Hania Aamir opted for a chic and minimalistic approach, donning a baby pink corset paired with a darker silk skirt. Her natural, glowing makeup and understated jewellery resonated with a Barbie theme, making it one of the best looks of the night, reminiscent of Margot Robbie at the Barbie premiere.
- Ramsha Khan: Ramsha Khan’s second outfit—a mint embroidered saree with a glittery blouse—was stunning, perfectly paired with minimal jewellery. The curls in her hair and her pinky-orange makeup complemented her outfit beautifully. However, her first look left much to be desired, particularly due to an unfortunate overuse of 3D floral embellishments.
- Azfar Rehman: Azfar Rehman’s simple yet stylish grey suit paired with a black turtleneck was effortlessly chic. While basic, it was a look we appreciated, particularly his chunky loafers and round sunglasses.
- Hamza Sohail: Hamza Sohail also opted for a basic black suit with a silky shirt, which made him look good but not great. Nonetheless, his good looks and tailored suit worked in his favor.
The Disappointing (A.K.A. Stay Home)
- Dananeer Mobeen: Dananeer Mobeen’s white frock, adorned with gold embroidery and voluminous sleeves, felt more suited for a wedding than an awards ceremony. Despite her natural makeup and high ponytail, this look missed the mark entirely.
- Yumna Zaidi: While Yumna Zaidi is a talented actress, her ensemble—a bedazzled white shirt paired with a beaded black skirt—did not work. The mismatched outfit felt like a clash of styles, and the poorly executed shirt panel only added to the confusion. A stylist update might be in order.
- Sehar Khan: Sehar Khan’s green Saniya Maskatiya gown was beautiful but poorly tailored, leaving it looking bland despite her statement jewellery.
- Mawra Hocane: Mawra Hocane’s outfit was a hodge-podge disaster that could have been designed by her less fashionable British-Pakistani cousin. This was arguably one of the evening’s worst looks.
- Ahad Raza Mir: Ahad’s red velvet ensemble with excessive beading was another fashion misstep. It might be time for him to consider new stylist options, especially since his father, Asif Raza Mir, looked dapper in a grey suit with a chic scarf.
- Sahir Ali Bagga: Sahir Ali Bagga’s heavily adorned black suit with silver tassels seemed better suited for a country music event, causing visual discomfort.
- Atif Aslam: Despite being a beloved singer, Atif’s outfit was a fashion faux pas. The silver-studded black jacket and crooked bow tie created a disjointed look that was far from appealing.
- Mamya Shah Jaffar: Mamya’s outfit resembled a poorly made replica of Blake Lively’s Met Gala dress. While the top half was acceptable, the ill-fitting and cheap-looking bottom half was a complete miss.
